The last windmill in NorwichCAROLINE HOSKIN artist lives and works with John Broadbent in the last windmill in Norwich.


Born in the West Country, daughter of John Hoskin, sculptor. As a child, brought up by innkeeper grandparents. Early on, some generous teachers helped her dyslexia into speed-reading the Victorian classics



Studied at Reigate Art College and Harvard.


Hitchhiked to San Francisco, married in Las Vegas. Lived London, lent a Hampstead studio; communal house in Lancaster; Birmingham; Norwich — large shed in garden as a studio; for the last 20 years a circular studio on the second floor of the mill. Two children.

  • Leicester 1987 — landscapes and nightscapes of India.
  • Norwich 1994 and 2000 — figures dreaming and thinking; heads, interiors.
  • John Innes Centre 2004 — one visitor described this as ‘furniture and body-parts’: tables and chairs stand for experiences in childhood, and the feelings attached to them; heads, hands, fingerprints search for proof of identity.
  • Salthouse Norfolk 2011 - paintings specific to sky, sea and shore of the site. With an artist's book and sea stories by John Broadbent, poems by Emilie Vince

Teaching
